Americanists....worldwide!

From Lugano to La Jolla....what a remarkable amalgam of ideas, insights, and perspectives. Welcome to this site. Mr. Izsa (TASIS) and Mrs. Shaul (LJCDS) invite you to join us in our conversations about the history and the realities of America's history and culture--from a decidedly international perspective.

Each month a new series of questions will be posted here by Mr. Izsa and Mrs. Shaul. Please click on the blog posts and write in your comments for the questions below, per your teacher's instructions.

Please make certain that entries are thoughtfully written (check for typos and grammatical faux pas), as erudite as you can make them, and appropriately worded for a school-related activity (note: students from other parts of the world may not share your same philosophies or your same sense of humor, so please be mindful of our differences).

With every blog session assigned, one or two can be direct responses to the questions, but at least one MUST respond directly to the students who have already written posts, answering one thread per question (more is welcome, this is the minimum requirement).Be specific. Explain why you might agree or disagree with their (his/her) opinions. Feel free to "debate" or "discuss" with your international counterpart. Make sure we can identify you with your name so you can receive credit for your contributions.

The Creation of a New Nation Question 1

Consider what you've studied about the creation of the earliest colonies.  It is rather amazing that religion (Massachusetts) and economics (Virginia) eventually came together into one country.  With that in mind, consider which influences the United States  more today: religion/morals or the pursuit of economic prosperity?

  1. Nowadays, economic prosperity has a greater influence on the United States rather than religion/moral. Evidently most wars, disharmony and feuds with foreign countries or between the government are due to economy issues. Society also influences the economic prosperity factor in the United States, most Americans prioritize economy rather than religion. Leading it to become a leading influence on the United States.

  3. It is hard to say whether economic prosperity or religion influences the United States more, as it is such a large country. We cannot make one statement that will apply to millions of people in hundreds of cities. Just as there were before, the US is full of people with very different goals in life. While some are only after monetary success, others are very focused on their religion. It often seems as if the government is only focused on the economy, but that is not always the case. In modern events Obama wanted to intervene in Syria for moral reasons and not for money. Overall, I believe that there is a mixture of various things that influences America rather than just one factor.

    1. You can see on what the country is more focused on by looking on the society in general, looking at what people are interested in, what are their goals and their media. The fact that we are all different is not really the case. In the end the majority wins and this majority would than influence the rest of the people.
You can't really be sure what Obama was actually thinking when he wanted to intervene Syria. It is only an assumption. Usually politicians don't do things for their moral beliefs especially when they get involved with other countries. What would be the point of Obama wasting his countries resources (when it is already in big debts) without getting any benefit from it.

    2. I agree with Paulina, in the US there are different people and it just all really depends on their point of views. Yes religion is important to some people, but so is economics. The way I feel it influences the US depends on who's "voice" is heard above everyone else.

    3. I agree with Paulina because most people may say that the United States focuses more on economy, but you can't classify the country under one category only. There is definitely a mixture of the two and it depends on what people value more, whether it's economy over religion, vice versa, or maybe both are valued equally.

  4. Today, money rules the world, and even the US is trying to reach economic perfection. It needs to deal with the debts and provide the army with expensive paraphernalia.

  5. In today's American society economics is more important than any other aspect of our culture. In fact, the U.S is one the most economic driven countries in the world. The American Dream is present in our country for a reason, immigrants from all around the world came to America for the possibility of the such a thing. In other words these people came to America to work hard and in result getting a higher paying job. In my opinion the world and history always revolves money and power and the U.S is a main contributor in that.

  7. Economic prosperity is currently more important in the U.S than religion. Once America is one of the largest economies in the world, the American population is influenced by this. Although religion and morals are strongly present in the country, people consider their own economic prosperity as priority. I think that what America is today is a mix of several factors.

  8. Economics is currently more important than religion in the Unites States. The US economy is currently in bad shape but still remains one of the biggest economies in the world. This motivates the people to stay at the top. religion still plays a big factor in the US but people are more concerned about their annual income and their countries economy.

    1. I agree with Frank because religion used to play a bigger role in the United States than it does today. Many people are motivated to succeed in one's career to live as best of a life as possible. More people in society now days are more concerned about money than they are about their morals/religion.

  10. Today American society is more interested in money rather than religion. The world has changed since the first colonies were built, and in todays society people need money to live a normal/average life, when in first colonies you just had to farm and your life would be average, you would have just enough saving to feed your family. However today people have more things to spend on.

    1. I disagree with Ivan since in both cases you needed money to live an average life. There were always things on which people wanted to spent money on.
Its not necessarily that if you are a farmer you can't live an average life today.

  11. Most of the world today is more influenced by economic prosperity than religion and America is not an exception. Often religion today is used as a tool to control people by the individuals who want to reach their own economic prosperity.
We can see that the American society is more influenced by the economic prosperity by looking at movies and commercials which try to convince us to buy more stuff which according to them would make us happier.

  12. Although many practice religion is the US, economic prosperity is praised much higher. America is more known for its desire of a stable economy rather than wanting its people to practice religion. Due the vast diversity in in America, there isn’t a dominating religion; thus not influencing non-religious people. If one were to ask a foreigner why he would be moving to America, he would most likely say for a desire of business and making money, not to practice his religion freely.

  13. Clearly economic prosperity. Morals and religion have nearly disappeared in modern American society. As we know, the US is known to be an economic superpower rather than a country run by religious principles (Iran, for example). The US is called the "promised land" because it is the place where many people have made fortunes under the capitalist system, where many immigrants from all over the world have come to live a better life. I think the explanation to this is America's ethnic diversity, thus religious diversity. No major religion is present.

  14. When comparing the influence of religion and economic prosperity in today’s society, the latter is the more significant, and it is what our entire community is based on. Although during the time of the colonists religion played a huge part in colonies along the East Coast, you’ll find that it has a much less significant role in today’s society, to the point where it is almost non-existent. When the first colonies were established, religion and the law went hand and hand. The head of the church was considered one of the most important people in the community and there were even laws that mandated that all members attend church every week, and anybody who did not follow this rule was severely punished. Today, not only is there a separation between the church and state, but there are countless different religions, including the choice to have no religion at all. Quite contrary, economic has had a constantly increasing influence. There is a huge weight placed on the economy, and doing everything possible to improve our economic prosperity. Therefore economic prosperity is the more significant aspect in today’s society.

  15. Now a days, United States is much more influenced by economic ideals than religion. Even though there is a huge diversity of religion and race, economy is still the main focus on society. They have the idea of making an impact of economic growth on their country, and basically most society is influenced by it. Therefore, I believe this focus of economic prosperity will continue to be the main ideal for the United States, although religion will also be a factor for the environment and the growth of society.

  16. In today's society, the United States in my opinion is influenced more by morals/religion rather than economic prosperity. Many people have a certain religion that they choose to practice as well as a set of morals that they are taught as a child. Economic prosperity is a big deal in America, but I also think that only people who actually care about the economy and politics are the ones interested in talking/learning about it. Also, I think that age plays a huge factor because most younger children are less interested in economics until they become adults, but most of the time may be involved with a religion and a set of morals that they've been taught.

  17. The pursuit of economic stability is by far the most captivating aspect of our society. Most everything we do is to set ourselves up to make money. Why are we in school? To learn and become smart enough to go to college and graduate. Then get a good job in order to make a desirable amount of money. All roads in life lead to money, not everything has a direct relation to religion.

    1. I agree with Christian because we only go to school to better our selves down the road, wether that be with college or our first job. Our first job can very much so depend on the education we received, that will dictate if we have a high paying job or not. It is still possible to ascertain a high paying job if you do not receive a great or even any education but it is very difficult.

  18. In the United States the ideas of religion, morals, and the pursuit of economic prosperity build upon each other yet also contradict each other. I think that it is very difficult to decide which is up held the most in our country because the United states is both a mixing pot and a melting pot of different religions, moral standards, and economic desires. Deciding whether or not one is up held more than other is totally biased towards the way the individual sees society, and the society or not that they live in.

  19. I believe that in the United State the pursuit of economic prosperity is more influential than the ideas of religion and morals today. Now a days we go to school to learn how to succeed in life. We are given the basics to succeed . The definition of success now a days is revolved around money. Most People care more about money rather than what type of person they are. There are still religious schools today but not every school is revolved around religion. It is your choice to go to a school like that.

  20. I believe that in the United States today, religion/morals is not as influential as the pursuit of economic prosperity. Growing up as a teenager in the United States, there is an unbelievable amount of pressure on ones shoulders. Society suggests that if you do not go to college, then you won't get a good job which is most of the time true. However, the pressure put on people all across America to succeed in a career is far greater than the pressure that society puts on someone to go to church.

    1. I agree with Matt because growing up our elders want us to succeed in life and by doing that there is more pressure for you to do better than you elders in life. The pressure that is put on us to get our first job can be a reflection on the schools we have been to. But there is no pressure for you to go to church that is your choice.

  21. In my opinion, the pursuit of economic prosperity has more influence on the United States than religion in today's times. In the past, people would weigh their success by their morals, good deeds, and how their community viewed their name. Now, success is commonly measured by your wealth and what you've accomplished in your career. This could be due to the increase in the variety of jobs and decrease in religious intolerance. People are more likely to sell out or forget their principles for the chance of economic prosperity.

  22. America now a days has the objective to grow economically and is no longer driven by religion. The religion morals are still important to the United States but the society is not affected too much by it.

  23. I believe that in the United States today, the economic prosperity is much larger than religion and morals in today society. In todays society we go to school to learn how succeed in life. In the past, people would use religion to show how successful they were by there moral and religion. Today, people show how they succeed in life by how much money they earn. I think most people care about how much money they make more than they type of person they are.

  24. The US used to have more of a balance of importance between religion and economy, however now a days economy is more valued by far. The US is constantly effected by economy and by now religion has barely any influence on the society anymore since many people that live in the states aren't religious at all. America is focused on the growth of their economy and most people in the society are concentrated on succeeding in education and work much more than religion.
