Americanists....worldwide!

From Lugano to La Jolla....what a remarkable amalgam of ideas, insights, and perspectives. Welcome to this site. Mr. Izsa (TASIS) and Mrs. Shaul (LJCDS) invite you to join us in our conversations about the history and the realities of America's history and culture--from a decidedly international perspective.

Each month a new series of questions will be posted here by Mr. Izsa and Mrs. Shaul. Please click on the blog posts and write in your comments for the questions below, per your teacher's instructions.

Please make certain that entries are thoughtfully written (check for typos and grammatical faux pas), as erudite as you can make them, and appropriately worded for a school-related activity (note: students from other parts of the world may not share your same philosophies or your same sense of humor, so please be mindful of our differences).

With every blog session assigned, one or two can be direct responses to the questions, but at least one MUST respond directly to the students who have already written posts, answering one thread per question (more is welcome, this is the minimum requirement).Be specific. Explain why you might agree or disagree with their (his/her) opinions. Feel free to "debate" or "discuss" with your international counterpart. Make sure we can identify you with your name so you can receive credit for your contributions.

April question #3

Whether it's the start of WWI (the first mechanized war) the start of the Cold War and the usage of the atom bomb, or American soldiers in Iraq who correspond with their families via Skype, America has a long history of technological advancements coming as a result of the money spent on warfare.  Do you think the United States would have the technology as quickly if it did not have the wars?  Where else—and what else—could the impetus for such tech advancements come from?

  1. During war time their is a hunger and a fight off of the battlefield. Governments are always working and inventing in order to come up with the latest technology so as to have an upper hand on the competition, and to prove their superiority and dominance so that others do not question their authority. With or without war the hunger will remain, since although the urgency for new technology may dissipate, without the threat of attack, the desire for control will stay.

  2. The technology in the US mainly evolved due to wars. US involvement in WW1 and WW2 made them start making science based technologies, such as poison gas, atomic bombs, high explosives. These all evolved into something more, and made the US grow in its technology. US also wanted to create more weapons in order to win, so its technology kept growing because of competition and moral standard. War made them start with merely no evolved technology, but once they were in the course of action, they realized what they needed to create in order to fight better.

  3. The United States would not have as many technological advances as it does now if it weren't for international conflict and competition. Wars give the government a good motive to spend lots of money and effort on developing new technology that could lead them to victory. Even when there is no war, countries are competing with each other to prove their strength.

  4. Lets first leave clear that Skype was not American until is was bought recently by Microsoft. Skype was created in Denmark. I think the US involvement in wars was certainly one of the reasons why it created these technologies, however, I don't think it was the only or the most important factor. The US also created these technologies to meet with the general needs of our rapidly growing globalized society. Being able to do tasks faster and more easily, being able to see or talk someone thousands of miles away, and being able to get to another place faster are many things that were created without the need of war. It is true though that technology that has to do with the military was largely affected by war.

  5. During the wars humans always had a sense of risk and self-preservation. Moreover during the war the government also finances a ton of money, to be more superior to the opponent country. Those factors greatly motivate scientists to advance the technology. Therefore United States wouldn’t have the technology as quickly if it didn’t have wars since if there were no wars people wouldn’t be as motivated as during the wars.
