Americanists....worldwide!

From Lugano to La Jolla....what a remarkable amalgam of ideas, insights, and perspectives. Welcome to this site. Mr. Izsa (TASIS) and Mrs. Shaul (LJCDS) invite you to join us in our conversations about the history and the realities of America's history and culture--from a decidedly international perspective.

Each month a new series of questions will be posted here by Mr. Izsa and Mrs. Shaul. Please click on the blog posts and write in your comments for the questions below, per your teacher's instructions.

Please make certain that entries are thoughtfully written (check for typos and grammatical faux pas), as erudite as you can make them, and appropriately worded for a school-related activity (note: students from other parts of the world may not share your same philosophies or your same sense of humor, so please be mindful of our differences).

With every blog session assigned, one or two can be direct responses to the questions, but at least one MUST respond directly to the students who have already written posts, answering one thread per question (more is welcome, this is the minimum requirement).Be specific. Explain why you might agree or disagree with their (his/her) opinions. Feel free to "debate" or "discuss" with your international counterpart. Make sure we can identify you with your name so you can receive credit for your contributions.

November question #3: Mid-Term Elections and Looking Forward to 2016

Consider the election results from earlier in the month in the United States.  How does this election set up the country for the 2016 Presidential election?  What hypotheses can you make about the outcome of that next election?  Why?

  1. This past election shows us that Republican are in majority present in the House of Representatives and the Senate. In my opinion, I think that it is going to lead the United States to a Republican win. I think that the mid-term elections tend to reveal in major part, which party is going to win the elections or not.

    2. I also agree with you considering the fact that it was clearly easy to understand that the republicans would win the parliament elections, in fact this is exactly what happened. I'm worried too about the fact that now there is a republican parliament and a democratic president. I guess that the new president elections will be win by a republican president

  2. The past election resulted in a Republican majority comprising both the House of Representatives and the Senate. I think this sets up a Republican President to win the 2016 election quite easily because from the polling statistics we can see that many people are not satisfied by the Democratic party and feel we need to try a bit of a change within our countries politics.

    1. I agree with you. The statistics for this election will bring almost for sure to a Republican President. People are tired of the Democratic Party which didn't bring solution as they thought. They need to breath new air.

    2. I agree that Republican majority will take over the election of 2016, because it is clear that people move towards the change from Democratic party to Republican.

  3. The mid-term elections resulted in the Republicans taking control of the senate. In addition, the republicans gained two seats in the governor's races. This shows an overall increase in Republican influence. This greatly impacts the 2016 elections. There is now republican support in the government which will most likely lead to the election of a republican president. The increase in republicans in our government show that the majority of Americans are voting for a member of the republican party. This shows that there is a good chance that majority of people will also vote for a republican president.

    1. I think that since the senate house has more republicans now, that the next two years until the presidential elections will not be as efficient as before, because with two opposing parties in the government, most of their decisions will always be opposed by the others' opinions. The senator elections of this year were important because it shows that there will be a stronger republican influence in the government, which will lead to a republican president. I agree with Savannah.

  4. Republicans gained senate majority in the past election. Fueled by dissatisfaction of the President and the economy, republicans came out on top. It is possible that during the final years of the Obama administration a stronger republican view may be embraced. The outcome of this election can be viewed as an American call for reform of the current government, rather than a leap to favoring the republican party. It would not be a stretch to assume that the next presidential election favors a republican president or a very close race.

    1. I agree with you because I believe that there has been an increase in the Republican influence. I also believe that in the next elections, the Republican party will win. Many people have chosen the Republican party instead of the Democratic party since the US needs a change when it comes to politics to increase its economy and the country itsef.

  5. The mid-term elections clearly showed how the Republican Party got stronger and took control of the Senate. The map of the states shows the preference of the majority in a republican member, that could be a result from the dissatisfaction of the actual government led by Obama (Democrat). Also, the actual people's preference can influence the choices in 2016, ending up with a Republican President elected.

  7. In the election of the 2016 the Republicans are ahead of the Democrats because their two representative are already chosen by the people, and they took the control of the Senate house of Representative at the United States. It shows that the people of the States wants changes in their political, economical, and social system. In my opinion, I think the Republicans won the election of the Senate but it doesn't mean that they can or will win the presidential election of the States it will be a huge changes in the White house and for the people. The system that the United States have according to the Democrats in the government will completely change if a Republican become a president.
