Americanists....worldwide!

From Lugano to La Jolla....what a remarkable amalgam of ideas, insights, and perspectives. Welcome to this site. Mr. Izsa (TASIS) and Mrs. Shaul (LJCDS) invite you to join us in our conversations about the history and the realities of America's history and culture--from a decidedly international perspective.

Each month a new series of questions will be posted here by Mr. Izsa and Mrs. Shaul. Please click on the blog posts and write in your comments for the questions below, per your teacher's instructions.

Please make certain that entries are thoughtfully written (check for typos and grammatical faux pas), as erudite as you can make them, and appropriately worded for a school-related activity (note: students from other parts of the world may not share your same philosophies or your same sense of humor, so please be mindful of our differences).

With every blog session assigned, one or two can be direct responses to the questions, but at least one MUST respond directly to the students who have already written posts, answering one thread per question (more is welcome, this is the minimum requirement).Be specific. Explain why you might agree or disagree with their (his/her) opinions. Feel free to "debate" or "discuss" with your international counterpart. Make sure we can identify you with your name so you can receive credit for your contributions.

Question 4

Should all citizens be protected from discrimination based on race, gender or religion? In what instances might discrimination be appropriate and/or a "privilege" rather than a right?

  1. Everyone was born equal, so everyone should be protected from discrimination etc. Discrimination shouldn't be appropriate in any instance.

    1. I agree that everyone has to be treated equal, but I would like to point out that compensating equality for everyone is an impossible task, as you can easily realize by questioning yourself if you would like to be treated equally when you devote yourself more to the society and have more capabilities than others. In short, people cannot practice the equal world.

  2. I think that all citizens should be protected, because all of us are equal so we shouldn't feel better or worse than someone, as for the discrimination appropriate i think that it wouldn't be right in any sense!

  3. if that group of people leads to violence and violations of the civil rights its justified

    1. I agree with Nitz. Although I believe all citizens should be protected, and I do believe everyone is equal, there are some cases where it is necessary. For instance, violence is a main example. If it is someone's race to join a "gang" or a "crew" then something should be done. However in order to do so, you must have a substantial amount of evidence. You may not just accuse them for their race and assume that everyone of that background may be associated with such things.

  4. Yes, I think that any type of discrimination shouldn't exist, however, the differences between man and woman should exist, because they are physically different, but I don't consider this differentiation a type of discrimination, for example, in my country men with 18 years old have to sing up to serve on the military force, but not women, and I don't think that women should have to also, it is a different but not a discrimination against women.

  5. All citizens should be protected from descrimination. It's not right to judge people from their appearance or in any other instances.

  6. Every one should be treated equally, no matter the race, gender or religion. The only case in which discrimination should be appropriate is towards violence. The world should discriminate the ones who commit vandalism, sudden attacks, murderer or robbery. The world should discriminate the ones who discriminate people by their color or religion.

    1. I agree with the first part. I do not think that a group of people should be labeled by some of their actions. An example is that some people consider muslims to be terrorists, based on a couiple of terror attacks. This is generalizing a people for an act of violence, when not all muslims are terroists.

  7. I believe that no matter if a person is Black American or White, if she is Catholic or Muslim, if she is a man or a woman, they all have the same rights because they are all equal to each other. They are all human beings; therefore, there cannot be any discrimination between the two. All people have a right not to be discriminated. Discrimination can NEVER be considered appropriate. As an example, if there is a grievance, discrimination is not the solution, but only worsens things.

    1. I completely agree with you. I believe that all people are born equal no matter their gender, race, religious beliefs, etc. No person should have to suffer from prejudice actions based on the stereotypical traits that are linked to different ethnic groups. I first learned of this from a quote I heard from one of the world's widely respected civil rights activists in Malcolm X.

"I believe in the brotherhood of man, all men, but I don't believe in brotherhood with anybody who doesn't want brotherhood with me. I believe in treating people right, but I am not going to waste my time trying to treat somebody right who doesn't know how to return the treatment."

  8. All citizens should be protected from discrimination based on race, gender or religion. However, sometimes men are physically stronger than women, so in those kind of cases, they need to make some differences.

  9. No, all citizens equal and have to be protected by government. We all born equally and live the same life.

    1. I believe that all citizens are born equal and the race or group as a whole should not be descriminated against, but what about groups like the Nazis. Yes they are still human but that doesn't mean what they are doing is right.

  10. everyone has the same right so everyone should be protected by it no matter what is your skin color, religion, what are your opinions etc. and discrimination is always bad so it should never be appropriate.

  12. Yes, all citizens should be protected from discrimination. However, some discrimination, which is not based on one's appearance (such as gender and religion), could be appropriate .

    1. Hi Chihiro,
I'm curious to hear an example of when you think discrimination could be appropriate? In my opinion, I can't think of an instance where discrimination, even if it isn't based on gender or religion, would be appropriate. We must accept people's views on life even if they are different from our own. We must put ourselves in their shoes and ask "how would I feel if I were being discriminated against".

  13. To some extent people must be protected from the discrimination. As long as it doesn't affect the well being of a person it can take place. The example of such will be the price for tickets for children. Almost everywhere in the world children pay less for any tickets they buy which benefit them and their parents. The paradox is that the discrimination must be equal in order to be a privilege. By this I mean that if for example children get to pay less for the tickets then it means that all children regardless of the race should get to pay a lower price.

  14. People say that everyone should be protected from discrimination, but it is impossible to eliminate it since each person has his or her own bias towards race and gender. For example, the shops run by black people are avoided by people in Japan. Like this case, it might be justified to have a little discrimination to different races.

  15. yes, every single person should be protected from all kids of discrimination; however, sexual discrimination is sometimes necessary in few cases.

    1. I'm curious, under which circumstances is sexual discrimination "necessary"? Would this impact transgender individuals too?

      Delete
    2. I disagree with you. Can you provide an example of when sexual discrimination is necessary? I can't think of any cases where any type of discrimination is necessary. I believe that the only way to achieve global peace is through understanding and through acceptance of people different from ourselves. We don't necessarily need to agree with their personal views, but we must respect them.

  16. Everyone should be protected from the discrimination. Every person was born equal in this world. Discrimination might be appropriate towards individuals. By individuals I mean that every person (doesn't matter what race, gender and religion) can have bad personality, and discrimination towards such people is ok if it is necessary.

  17. All citizens should be protected from discrimination. people shouldn't be treated unequally based on their race, gender, or sex.

  18. All citizens should be protected from every kind of discrimination: race, gender, sex, religion, well-being and education. Only few cases of discrimination could be approved. I think of religious fundamentalists, which threat people's lives. Also religious sects and their stealing helpless people's lives and their money represent an occult threat to reject.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I believe all citizens should be protected from discrimination because everybody has the rights and we are all equal and race, gender, and religion do not matter for it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yes, everyone should be protected from discrimination no matter what. I do not believe that there are any instances in which discrimination is permissible. Every person should be guaranteed the same civil rights as outlined in our Constitution and Bill of Rights despite race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion.

  21. All citizens should be protected. Discrimination may be appropriate to discriminate students applying for college. Colleges like to have a diverse student body and will often favor minorities over majorities. In this case being a minority would help in gaining admittance.
    Lara (LJCDS)

  22. All should be treated as equal. Being a minority is an unfair advantage when applying to schools however this should not be as such. Being part of the majority can also be an advantage because there are far less civil rights questions that concern the majority, its all about leveling the playing field. Were discrimination a non issue than race, gender, sexual orientation and religion would not be grounds to justify a certain type of behavior.

    DJV (LJCD)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Not necessarily. It's natural that majority thinks minority strange and different. This nature cannot be fixed. Minorities must follow the majorities' rules because it's majorities' privilege in their areas.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I disagree with you because I think that it is not something natural to think minority as different. I believe it is unethical to treat people differently just because of their skin color, for example. If you were to move in a country where you are not part of the majority, but of the minority, how would you feel? You would probably think that those people should accept you the way you are and consider you part of their community without isolating you. I think we should start to integrate people that are from another race into our state to live in a better and less discriminated world.

  24. I beleive that all races and ethnicities should be equal. Every man and women were born as equal and we should treat each other that way. Civil Rights should be a given and should not be earned.

  27. Yes, all US citizens should be protected from discrimination based on gender, race and religion. Some instances that might be appropriate for discrimination are determining weather or not the person is a citizen is not (illegal immigrants). Another appropriate discrimination is “racial profiling” security in the airport to protect our country as 9/11 was a tragic event and took the lives of thousands of US citizens and put our country in danger.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I believe that everyone is equal, therefore everyone should be treated and protected equally. If that means more security check to one person, than everyone should be checked more as well.

  29. I do believe that all people should be protected from discrimination based on gender, race, and religion because those are three aspects of someones life that someone can not control. I do not believe that someone should be judged on something that they can not control in their life.

    ReplyDelete
  30. discrimination should never be ok, although it is good to be able to laugh about stereotypes about ones SELF religion or ethnicity it is not morally correct to to discriminate against others.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Everyone should be protected from discrimination based on race and gender because they cannot choose these aspects of their lives. Religion can be chosen but it should not be something to discriminate against because no religion is better than another. Discrimination may be appropriate if you are discriminating against someone who has chosen to do something bad.

  32. In todays society all people should have equal rights if they are a citizen, and descriminating should be allowed if the person is not a citizen.

    1. I partly disagree with you. What about if a person who is traveling to Italy meets an Italian man and decides to marry him? She automatically becomes an Italian citizen, but I would not consider her as a full Italian person because she has never lived in Italy before, should she still be discriminated? I think your statement is a little bit too vague..to what extent can a person be considered a citizen? I honestly believe that although a person is not a citizen, he/she should be respected anyway.

    2. Ale, I totally agree with you. Brent, why do you think we should discriminate against people who aren't citizens? Think about it this way: imagine if Lucas wasn't a citizen yet. Would we treat him badly in class? Would we discriminate against him just because he isn't a citizen? I think when you say that we should discriminate against people who aren't citizens, you're more thinking about the Mexican undocumented people who are in our country? If so, that's a totally different topic. But I'm curious what you are thinking about when you state "escriminating should be allowed if the person is not a citizen."

  36. Discrimination should not be allowed but discrimination in the past should not over compensated not like in college. Many minorites have a advantage in getting into college just because they are a minority which is not giving a equal chance to all applicants.

    1. as a result of the past discrimination in the u.s minorities have had less opportunities to get in to college due their low economic status therefore, minorities should have a better chance to get in to college depending on how low their families finances are

  37. Discrimitation should not be allowed because no matter what is your skin color or your religion you always have equal rights and they should always protect you.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Discrimination, in all aspects, is never appropriate or a "privilege" because race and gender isn't something anyone can decide for themselves. Furthermore, religion does not define a person's capacity to be a good citizen, therefore discrimination based on a religion is unethical. All citizens should be protected equally because America is a melting pot of cultures, and Americans don't all look the same or believe in the same things, but it's the fact that most of us can all coexist and that's what makes America so unique and it's something we should take pride in. One's rights as a CITIZEN is what should be emphasized, regardless of any other factor such as race, gender, or religion.
