Each month a new series of questions will be posted here by Mr. Izsa and Mrs. Shaul. Please click on the blog posts and write in your comments for the questions below, per your teacher's instructions.

Please make certain that entries are thoughtfully written (check for typos and grammatical faux pas), as erudite as you can make them, and appropriately worded for a school-related activity (note: students from other parts of the world may not share your same philosophies or your same sense of humor, so please be mindful of our differences).

With every blog session assigned, one or two can be direct responses to the questions, but at least one MUST respond directly to the students who have already written posts, answering one thread per question (more is welcome, this is the minimum requirement).Be specific. Explain why you might agree or disagree with their (his/her) opinions. Feel free to "debate" or "discuss" with your international counterpart. Question 5

What groups of people face the most discrimination today? Should the Constitution and Bill of Rights protect these people from such discrimination? Why might such injustice exist even in a country where individual freedoms should be protected?

53 comments:

  1. I think that it's still the black people that face most of the discrimination, and gay people as well.. I really think that they should be protected because in the end they are just like us, they work they study they do everything that we are doing, but we still see them in a different way. I think that it still exist from the stereotype and because of the past generations that always talk in a bad way about it.

  2. Black people are still harder to get jobs today as well even though they are protected by those protection.

  3. every minority in a country usually faces discrimination today.
if the discrimination from other people towards them doesn't price them from their civil rights its ok.

    1. What i think about this is that who is the minority in a country. Are they the foreigners? Minority is a strong word, and I think it isn diffulct to call a people a minority, and that they automatically are descriminated against.

  4. Gay people are the one who suffer the most discrimination today, the Bill constitution of rights should protect them of it because they are normal people as well the others citizens , this injustice may still exist because of some religions in some places and stereotype crested in the past.

    1. I would argue this because the fact of the matter is Gay people are featured everywhere. This is because social media has made many efforts to make being Gay more accepted. Black people are still and sadly will probably continue to be the most discriminated against because of the past there is tension and that creates racism. Even if there are stereotypes used that black people are fast or strong, though positive, it is still being racist and any discrimination sets the progress our society has made back.

  5. I think that in these days, Blacks are the people who greatly suffer from discrimination because some White people still think that they are inferior. The Constitution and Bill of Rights should definitely protect their rights from discrimination because they are entitled to be considered equal citizens of a country.

    1. This is saying that all blacks are descriminated against, which is not true throughout the whole world. The black people in Africa probably aren't descriminated against.. Furthermore, there are lots of people who do not descriminate black people in the US for example.

    3. It is true that still some whites think black people are inferior to them, but black people are not discriminated in the society. They are given impartial opportunities as we can see many successful black athletes out there and the African American president, Obama. These days, still some whites still have the ideas about racial difference, but it cannot be refuted that all races are more likely to be treated with their capabilities than their colors of skin.

  6. I think black people. If you see black guy, first that comes to your mind that he is a gangster or a thief. It is common misconception that everyone does because of the history.

  7. I think now a days black people are still judge by there skin color, and yes the constitution should protect them from being discriminate by others group of people. I think it stills exist because from all there life african americans have been judge by they skin color.

  8. I think that today it is still black people who get disscriminated the most because some white people still think that blacks are not equl to white people and that all of the blacks are bad people just because of their skin color.

  9. Nowadays discrimination towards blacks still exists. The constitution of the United States had already done everything possible to stop it. Today, black and white people have exactly same rights. Whites need more time to get used to the everyday presence of black people. The discrimination still exists because past generation had disrespect toward blacks. For younger generations blacks won't be a big deal, and the discrimination will stop in a sooner future.

  10. I believe it is still black people who face the most discrimination today.
The Constitution and Bill of Rights should protect these people from such discrimination.
I think the reason black people still face some difficulties is the fact and history that white people used to use blacks as their slaves.

  12. It might be true that the black people are still discriminated against in the United States. The discrimination became less strong, since black people are equally protected by the constitution as the white people. I believe it is harder for a black person to get a job in the US or get into good school. The discrimination still exists, and I think it will exist for many more years. White people had considered black people inferior for centuries, and radical change of the opinions is impossible to be completed in only few decades. The big changes take the long time.

  13. what group of people face the most discrimination depends on the surrounding, and all kinds of rights should protect those people who face such obstacles but in reality, the world have to wait until the old fashioned racist generation pass through.

  14. Black people in Europe or Asia. For example, in Milan there are many blacks who are stayed away from others. They face difficulties to be treated equally.
This fact cannot be done differently by constitution as long as they are not suffering from violence.

  15. I think black people are the one who still suffer from discrimination today. However, it can not be said that only such people face those situation. No matter what, people who suffer from the discrimination should be protected by the Constitution and Bill of rights.

  16. Nowadays, black people are still largely discriminated. The homosexual world has a real hard time to be considered as normal relationships. Also the homeless are like forgotten people to be scare of. Constitution must guarantee those people a decent life as all the others. My point is that this generation is still stuck in an old-minded mentality, willing to create a so-called "good society", where being different is something dangerous of their quietness.

  17. I think people who face the most discrimination are still black people. Discrimination of black people stuck on people's minds for long time and it is hard to reset their minds even though they know that discrimination is wrong.

  18. Minority groups face the most discrimination today. Specifically in our country, I think that gay people are facing the most discrimination today. That being said, discrimination against black people isn’t gone at all, but it definitely is not as prominent as it used to be. It is COMPLETELY the job of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights to protect these people, even if it means amending articles from these documents that have been the same since the country was created. Injustice still exists because people are inherently prejudice and in some ways, racist. I think for many people it may be subconscious, but it is still very much there in today’s society because of that.

  19. I believe that the homosexual population faces the most discrimination today. Coming from a naval city where there are a large amount of people from different places with different ideals, racial discrimination seems to be very backwards and is really looked down upon by most San Diego citizens. I should add that there is also varying levels of discrimination, however any negative form of discrimination intended to make another person uncomfortable is a bad thing.

  21. Poor people face the most discrimination. Everything is controlled by the powerful and wealthy people, and poor people are busy to catch up the flow of the society. They are excluded from any decisions that decide the way of society where they belong to. This injustice is still in exist because everyone wants to be in controlling power and want to be better than any other.

    1. I partly disagree with you. For example, in France the new President who has been elected, Hollande, promised that there are going to be more taxes to the rich people so that poor people will benefit. This demonstrated that not everything in every country is controlled by the wealthy.

  22. Each person and all races will encounter discrimination sometime in their lives. In my opinion homosexual people endure the most discrimination because they go against the "normal" way of life and people look at them differently. The Constitution/Bill of Rights should protect homosexuals as they should protect everyone else as well. Injustice happens everywhere regardless if they are free or not, we are only human and no humans are perfect, each person has or will do some injust things, its just the way we are programed and the way we think.

    1. I perfectly agree with you and I think that just because they have different sexual orientations than other people, they should not be discriminated but still be respected equally because as you say, they are still human beings. From a religious perspective, just because the church considers it immoral to be homosexual, it does not mean that homosexuals should be marginalized from society.

  23. minorities face the most discrimination because people are always uncomfortable with people that are different than them. These groups should be protected but it is hard to control or tell people not to discriminate.

  24. The people that receive the most discrimination today would have to be homosexuals. I believe the constitution and Bill of Rights should most defiantly protect homosexuals and the people across the United States who are discriminated against. However I believe that people of the United States should have the right to vote on weather they approve of gay marriage or not. Injustice still exists because we have a democracy meaning “We the people of the United States” vote for our laws and leaders.

  25. The LGBT communities face the most discrimination today, and people deal with this growing group everyday. Just because people like the same sex, or are a little bit different does not mean it is a different concept than heterosexual relationships. My favorite line about this community is: "If you don't like gay marriage, don't get one".
Also, Mexican and Latino groups are subjected to stereotypes regarding their professions such as housekeepers and gardeners. We should respect these men and women who sacrifice their weeks to help support their families back home.

  26. I believe that people of all races and ethnicities can encounter discrimination. At the moment, I think that muslims, blacks and gays face discrimination the most. As well as Mexicans in the US, which are also discriminated against.

    1. The majority of the countries are facing the problem of discrimination. The inhabitants who were born in that regions and were growing up there of course don't like that big number of foreigners are coming, so it's basically a reason of discrimination.

  27. I believe that at the moment, African Americans, Muslims, and Mexicans face the most racial discrimination in the United States. This injustice still exists in countries where individual freedoms are protected because even though the government can physically protect minorities from discrimination, they cannot change the thoughts of the people who are discriminating against the minorities.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I believe that discrimination varies upon location. Here in san diego for example, probably reaching out even further, latino people are being discriminated against, although if you where a latino in Europe no one would think anything of it. Some countries are also much more judging and this results in much more discrimination because people dont like things that are out of the normal...

    1. I agree with you. For example, in Italy, the people who are discriminated the most are the ones who come from the Middle-East such as Arabia, Iran, Iraq and from the East such as Russia, Romania, Albania, Bulgaria. The Italian government talks about them as robbers, rapists and sometimes, in extreme cases even as murderers. I believe that the picture that the government gives us about those people is stereotypical and not all Eastern people are like that. Therefore, unless there are proofs of what these people do, they should not be discriminated.

  29. In my opinion, African Americans and homo sexuals face the most discrimination. The Bill of Rights and the Constitution should protect the minorities as best as possible to reduce violence especially. Injustice still exists because the government may be able to make laws against discrimination, but they cannot change peoples minds on the matter.

    1. Unfortunately, the minorities are always discriminated by others all over the world. However, not all the governments want to take care of this problem, for them it's easier don't to pay attention to this kind of problem at all.

  30. Middle Eastern people are probably the most descriminated against because of the war in the Middle East right now. If they are a citizen then they should be protected aginst descrimination, but if they are not a citizen then I don't think they have the right to be protected. All though people are protected from descrimination, other people may not beleive in equal rights.

  31. All minorities face some form of discrimination. In most cases it is not present in major cases. However, some cases that have reached higher levels is gay rights and discrimination towards ilegal Mexicans.

    1. I believe that those who deviate from the culturally acceptable norms tend to face the most discrimination. While the escalating controversy surrounding gay rights and illegal immigrants has shed light on these issues, it is likely that there are many unseen discriminatory acts that we are not aware of.

  32. I believe the LGBT community is facing the most discrimination. The Constitution and Bill of Rights should protect them but unfortunately they don't. This discrimination still exist because there are still hateful people. No matter how much legislation is passed the government can't change the way a person thinks about another person.

    1. Eric, I totally agree with your idea. People have to be protected by the constitution and bill of rights and no matter who he is. Members of LGBT movement aren't worth than others, so why don't they have the same rights as other.

      Delete
  33. The problem is no longer racial, now it is the LGBT community. Instead of having laws that help we currently have laws that restrict. I think that this community should be protected. I believe this discrimination exists because it is something that people do not know much about and it is something that is different than a lot of people's views

  34. I believe Muslims and Mexicans recieve the most discrimination today. Muslims because of 9/11 people get scarred when they see a muslim and Mexicans because there are so many that are illegal and I don't believe they should get the same rights we do because they don't belong to this country. I do think that muslims shouldn't have discrimination to them because almost all of them don't belong to a terroist group.

    1. Chrisine,

I disagree with your post I think it is important to add African Americans to this list because they also undergo tremendous discrimination even today because of their former status as slaves. Moreover, not only Mexicans are discriminated but all immigrants from South America who are trying to find opportunities for a better life in the US. I think they should not be discriminated against because they have the right given by the Declaration of Independence to pursue their happiness.

  35. In order to obtain admission into university it has become most difficult for a middle class caucasian person. The reason is, most colleges are facing their attention and priority on keeping a "diversified" student population. That being said, the past racial inequality in the United States has made colleges more cautious and focused on accepting minorities in order to maintain a reputation of giving people equal opportunities. However, there new focus of accepting minorities has made it extremely difficult for caucasian people to gain college admission. This is because caucasian people never faced racism.

  36. I believe everyone in the world gets discriminated in different ways depending on the area they live in. Pertaining to America only, I would have to guess that the black race, the homosexual sexuality, the female gender, and the Muslim religion faces the most discrimination. Unfortunately, I don't think there is any law that can be instituted into the constitution that would not break the rules stated by the first amendment. The US citizen's right to Freedom of Speech is a powerful law that cannot be abolished so I think there is no lawful way to stop discrimination in the United States. One can only hope that people can slowly get rid of their prejudiced beliefs whether they are hateful and violent or simple stereotypes that people unknowingly incorporate in their lives.
