Americanists....worldwide!

From Lugano to La Jolla....what a remarkable amalgam of ideas, insights, and perspectives. Welcome to this site. Mr. Izsa (TASIS) and Mrs. Shaul (LJCDS) invite you to join us in our conversations about the history and the realities of America's history and culture--from a decidedly international perspective.

Each month a new series of questions will be posted here by Mr. Izsa and Mrs. Shaul. Please click on the blog posts and write in your comments for the questions below, per your teacher's instructions.

Please make certain that entries are thoughtfully written (check for typos and grammatical faux pas), as erudite as you can make them, and appropriately worded for a school-related activity (note: students from other parts of the world may not share your same philosophies or your same sense of humor, so please be mindful of our differences).

With every blog session assigned, one or two can be direct responses to the questions, but at least one MUST respond directly to the students who have already written posts, answering one thread per question (more is welcome, this is the minimum requirement).Be specific. Explain why you might agree or disagree with their (his/her) opinions. Feel free to "debate" or "discuss" with your international counterpart. Make sure we can identify you with your name so you can receive credit for your contributions.

November question #3

What promises did Obama make while campaigning that are important to you?

21 comments:

  1. I am hoping that Obama will keep his promise of creating an environmentally friendly energy source in developing countries and to keep small businesses from becoming to powerful. The environment is not only important to me but to everyone and everything on this planet. If we keep treating the world this way it is for sure not going to last. Our country alone produces way to many dangerous emissions and Obama seems incapable of creating a healthy way of producing energy for ourselves and other countries, In addition, a lot small businesses are being taxed heavily and are forced to shut down. Obama is doing his best but his intentions are to tax the rich and give it to the poor. These small businesses provide many jobs but if Obama keeps taxing everyone like this, there may be more dilemmas in the near future. This makes the wealthy people in our country very mad because Obama said he would try to stop but has not found another way to support the lower class in our society.

    1. Well put Daniel. I both agree and disagree with the statements here said by Daniel. I agree with Daniels statements saying that Obama's taxing could cause some dilemmas in the near future. I do not believe that Obama clearly stated that he will stop with his style of taxing, and I think that he has said he is trying to push taxing the wealthier more. I disagree with his style of taxing so far during his presidency, and his idea of taxing will tax smaller businesses more, so he in a way is hurting what he is trying to help. I agree very much with Daniel that trying to help the environment is a good thing, and Obama is definitely trying to help out our planet.

  2. Obama promised to continue improving the educational system. He kept his last promise and improved it during his last term and I wish that he will continue. Also he promised to create new energy source, this is very good because the environment will be less hurted. These promises are important for me, and I wish he will keep his promises.

    1. I strongly agree. These are both very big promises that the president made to us and I hope that he does keep them. I would like it if we can preserve the world and the ozone with better energy. I also would really like if he could improve the educational system for when I have children. I would want the best for my children.

    2. I also really hope that he continues to improve the education in this country. Education is so important! The children now, will be the ones running this country later on so we need to make sure they are educated and capable.

    3. I agree, I hope that he will keep these promises because these are very important issues. The United States rank 23rd in the world for science scores. Education in our country is slacking and we seriously need to change that or the U.S. will cease to be a world superpower.

  3. his promise of clean energy is probebly his most important point and it was one of the obvious opposing ideals between the two canidates. Mr. Romenys stance on coal energy scared me personally he would of destroyed our public lands. where as obama only wants the envinroment to thrive.

    1. I am also interested and looking forward to his promise of clean energy and ways of being more efficent. I think that in todays world this topic has grown to be something defintily worth looking into. We are destroying our planet and we defintly in need of something different and innovative.

    2. I agree with Saml and Olivia. I am really looking forward to see what Obama will be doing about the green energy and also creating jobs amongst young people.

    3. I agree with Saml, Olivia and Taylor. One of Obama's promises for 2012 was "My plan will continue to reduce the carbon pollution that is heating our planet." Obama has come to this issue in other ways, like treating carbon dioxide as a pollutant under the law and possibly spending billions of dollars into cleaner energy. Obama brought the topic up in the First 2012 Presidential Debate in Charlotte, and I hope that he will strive to do something about this topic and not just mention it.

  4. I really hope Obama keeps his promise to keep America clean with sustainable energy, and to also protect wildlife. Another thing that I would like him to keep his promise on is that of Pro-Choice.

    1. I definitely think his promises to use bioenergy and to protect wildlife are important to me because personally I have this huge passion about nature. It will be really exciting to see that the America can have more contribution to protect the world environment.

  5. As a student, I find it very important that Obama wants to make college more affordable for middle class Americans. Some friends that I have met over the recent months have told me about their sturrlges with affording to go to top colleges or universities. This ties back into Obama's economic plan for the next 4 years, but I find the benefits of his plan to be more imporant than the overall picture of helping the economy in general. Before I proceed I would like to say, no, I'm not a feminist, but simply a woman who wants to pretain to her own rights as both an American citizen and a human being. I beleive that a woman's right to choose to have an abortion or not is imporant. I believe that it is unconsitutional to define what is right and wrong in a free country. Also, who are men to decide what a woman can choose? It should be that ONLY woman can vote on the matter and not men so that there is no contraversey as to whome has the say in the vote. That being said, it is imporant to me that Obama continues to support human rights with a minor focus of economic. Of course, money is imporant, but it is not everything. We are the reason for why money exists anyways.

    1. I agree with many of the points which Jenna stated, such as to make college more affordable for the American middle class, and also believe that a women should have rights into being able to decide whether she would like an abortion or not. I hope that Obama will continue into perusing not all but at least most of his promises for 2012.

    2. I agree with Jenna about women's rights to have an abortion. No matter what pro-life people believe about the situation, in the end it is the women's choice and it should stay that way. It is completely unconstitutional to take that away. I hope Obama continues to support pro-choice and encourages others to do as well.

    3. I with agree with Jenna and Dani on Obama's plan to keep college affordable for middle class citizens and Obama's plans to produce clean sustainable energy. I believe that investing in the education of Americas next generation of businessmen, teachers, scientist, politicians, and engineers is the best way to insure a strong economy of the future, Obama can also relate to this because he graduated with hundreds of thousands of dollars of dept as a young man. I think that investing in alternative energy is another great point that the president made by insuring the health of future generations and putting us in a position of not relying on foreign oil our whole lives, this also can produce more jobs.

    4. I agree with Jenna about the subject of clean energy. Although I declared my self a Romney supporter, I did like the fact that Obama pledged to move toward a greener America. I certainly feel that climate change will be a huge problem for our generation, and I think that anything that can be done to prevent the degradation of our environment is good. I also think it is important to lessen our dependance on foreign oil, which can be accomplished through the development of a large green technologies market in the United States.

    5. I completely agree with Jenna. Obama's plan to make college more affordable for the middle class citizens is really important to me because it will help me to pay my years at college. Also, I agree with Jenna's statement about the women rights.
The United States of America is a democracy. Therefore, people have a lot of liberties as well as a lot of rules to respect. And, in my opinion, women's right to chose to have an abortion or not is a liberty that women should always have. Women carry the baby, not men. So, men can't make any decision for the women.

  6. I think that his promise for a healthcare reform was the most important to me. I have insurance but it doesn't cover things related to my lifelong condition, because it is considered pre-excisting even if it's not. Obama is trying to get good healthcare that covers everything for everyone. This means that all the people who need the treatments I've had but can't afford them on their own will now have access to a better future.

  7. This election was about middle class and lower class issues. The commitment that he has about healthcare, which we know as Obama Care is really impressive. Even though high class criticize this, it is actually a really good way of taking care of poor people. For the gay and lesbien community, he has a point of view which he describes by saying "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell". Moreover, he left this issue to the power of states. I believe he is really open minded and aware of everything which is going on in America. Therefore, most of his commitments are including his improved thoughts.
