Americanists....worldwide!

From Lugano to La Jolla....what a remarkable amalgam of ideas, insights, and perspectives. Welcome to this site. Mr. Izsa (TASIS) and Mrs. Shaul (LJCDS) invite you to join us in our conversations about the history and the realities of America's history and culture--from a decidedly international perspective.

Each month a new series of questions will be posted here by Mr. Izsa and Mrs. Shaul. Please click on the blog posts and write in your comments for the questions below, per your teacher's instructions.

Please make certain that entries are thoughtfully written (check for typos and grammatical faux pas), as erudite as you can make them, and appropriately worded for a school-related activity (note: students from other parts of the world may not share your same philosophies or your same sense of humor, so please be mindful of our differences).

With every blog session assigned, one or two can be direct responses to the questions, but at least one MUST respond directly to the students who have already written posts, answering one thread per question (more is welcome, this is the minimum requirement).Be specific. Explain why you might agree or disagree with their (his/her) opinions. Feel free to "debate" or "discuss" with your international counterpart. Make sure we can identify you with your name so you can receive credit for your contributions.

March Question #1

1) It was less than 100 years ago that women finally earned the right to vote in the United States.   Even today, there are renewed calls for an Equal Rights Amendment to be passed that states, "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State on account of sex."   In your opinion, what would the advantages of disadvantages be of passing such an amendment?   Is this a necessary step to continually promote the equal treatment of women?

  1. In my opinion, the fact that there are renewed calls for an “Equal Rights Amendment” to be passed shows that there is an improvement towards creating better and equal rights for women. There are still places on the world where women are discriminated against and live under misconceived ideas. In some places, women are still looked down upon and men are given better and superior rights. This amendment could possibly only be an advantage. The world once again has to be reminded that women, just like men, have the right to be independent, have access to education, vote and be able to decide for themselves. The amendment that states "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State on account of sex" should definitely be passes as it will encourage the women and remind them that they have the power to be strong and stand up for themselves. This amendment could remind the world that women have the same rights as men and that gender should not change the amount of rights one has. I think, it is a necessary step to continually promote the equal treatment of women, because some men will deny the fact that women have the same rights as they do and quickly become oblivious to that fact. People constantly have to be reminded of this, and although some people will not accept it, the laws will remind them of it.

  2. There must be equality in the country. Otherwise the country cannot progress or develop. A society that has such problems as gender or racial inequality will not use all it's opportunities for expanding and compete with other countries. Passing this amendment would be a big step forward for the United States. It will show the maturity of the country's residents, and their ability to make wise decisions without the interference of the feeling of superiority or envy. Also, it will encourage women to be more free in the society, have more opportunities and give more it the country.

    1. I agree. I feel like this law needs to be passed because people need to understand that women have as many rights as men. It is kind of sad though that we need to insist on something that was supposed to be clear and understood when the right to vote was given to women a century ago...

  3. I believe that this is a necessary step that the United States should take, as we are in the 21st century and women should have had the equal opportunities that men have a long time ago. Taking measures such as these would promote a positive image for the United States and would also reduce the amount of conflicts that are being taken place within the nation itself. In my point of view, "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State on account of sex" should most definitely be a new amendment in the constitution because women are human as well and deserve the same treatment and respect socially, economically, and politically as those of men as women contribute to the economy just as much, possibly some more than men, as their counterparts do.

    1. I completely agree! Women for so long have been discriminated and degraded by society. It portrays women as inferior to men, even though women can do anything men can do. Women are overlooked even though we go through natural pains like child birth that men couldn't imagine to have experienced. I mention child birth because it's a strong example of the strength women have and it's the example women commonly use as reference. You can see women in any workforce that you see men: the military, politics, sports, government workforce. There's nothing a man can do that a woman can't do. I completely support the passing of this new amendment because it makes a bold statement that women are just as equal as men, in an economic standpoint. As a country, we could lead by example for other countries to consider the rights of women.

  4. I think it is necessary because often people don't understand what equality is, and assume that passing these bills makes women"above" men, but the way I see it is that women are in many cases still underneath men, and to reach actual equality need certain measures that will push them up further, but they will eventually only reach sub-equality because of the belief that they are trying to be superior than men and not equal. Basically they need to do things that some might see as not right to get equality, but it is all for reaching equality.

  5. Today it is believed that we live in a fair world where everyone is equal to each other. But in reality, we live in a world that white men are often more superior than African American men and women. But why is there such discrimination when all men are created equal? White men lived a dominant life when they were literally the only ones who could vote until 1870, until the African American men gained the right to vote. It was not until, 1964 that the equal right Act was passed for women. Today still, women are often not viewed equal to the men especially in the poor Islamic countries. The fact that there are renewed calls for an Equal Rights Amendment in the United States that states “ Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State on account of sex.” shows that the United States is aware of the fact that the women are not held equal to men in many states. Hopefully, this act would help people from the entire world to finally understand that every human being in this planet is equal to each. There isn’t any superior gender, superior religion, superior color or a superior nationality.

  6. In my opinion, I believe it is neccessary to give women the exactly same rights as the men have because women are also humans and they deserve the rights. Moreover, I think it is neccessary for not only in US, but also every countries in the world. There would not be any disadvantages upon anybody because everyone deserves the same things. Furthermore, if the amenment doesn't pass, the feminists will continually fighting for their rights, then, it will also cause more conflicts and all kind of protests.

    1. I am in complete agreement. Women have been second to men for so long that some people still out there see men superior to women. In order for that idea to change, if there needs to be an amendment to be passed to do so, then I am all for it. Other countries should adopt the same policy. There is no reason that gender or race should dictate one's rights.

  7. These kind of amendments are fundamental in our already developed society, but they can also be useful to let inspire other less developed and close minded countries that still consider women inferior. It's never enough the promotion of these principles. They should be supported by everyone but there are always exceptions and so we need to still mark these things nowadays.

  8. In my opinion, passing this amendment throughout the United States is essential because everyone that is counted as a citizen, should be able to have the exact same rights. There is not anything that men can do, that women can not do. This amendment about women having the same rights of men should have been passed around years ago. It is unfair for women to work in the house and take care of children and to work hard to get things, but on top of that not being able to vote or to earn rights that you deserve. Even today, the Equal Rights amendment should be passed around since we are supposably a world where now a days men and women are equal, but still white people are superior than African Americans. If we are "equal", why do some white people consider themselves better than African Americans? The US should pass the Amendment of Equal rights all around the US, until discrimination stops completely and until there is equality between everyone.

    1. I agree, I think this amendment should be passed to make another statement about the equal rights movement. Even though technically every citizen in the US does have equal rights I think there are still components to that statement that are lacking. Whether purposely or not the idea of equal rights is not completely being filled and passing an amendment about equal rights could help, and it definitely wont cause damage.
