Americanists....worldwide!

From Lugano to La Jolla....what a remarkable amalgam of ideas, insights, and perspectives. Welcome to this site. Mr. Izsa (TASIS) and Mrs. Shaul (LJCDS) invite you to join us in our conversations about the history and the realities of America's history and culture--from a decidedly international perspective.

Each month a new series of questions will be posted here by Mr. Izsa and Mrs. Shaul. Please click on the blog posts and write in your comments for the questions below, per your teacher's instructions.

Please make certain that entries are thoughtfully written (check for typos and grammatical faux pas), as erudite as you can make them, and appropriately worded for a school-related activity (note: students from other parts of the world may not share your same philosophies or your same sense of humor, so please be mindful of our differences).

With every blog session assigned, one or two can be direct responses to the questions, but at least one MUST respond directly to the students who have already written posts, answering one thread per question (more is welcome, this is the minimum requirement).Be specific. Explain why you might agree or disagree with their (his/her) opinions. Feel free to "debate" or "discuss" with your international counterpart. Make sure we can identify you with your name so you can receive credit for your contributions.

March Question #3

3) Flags are symbolic representations of any country, whether displayed at the Olympic Games, raised during wars/battles, or in the case of the United States, even saluted ritualistically in a "Pledge of Allegiance."   Please read the article below:

In your opinion, should the display of the American flag be banned at either LJCDS or TASIS, for all of its symbolism?  Is it okay at American institutions for the flag to be flown each day, or, out of respect to others, should it be banned, as it was in this university's lobby?

  1. I don’t think that the display of the American flag should be banned at either LJCDS or TASIS. As a non-American student, I don’t feel offended or disrespected by the fact that there is a display of the American flag. We study in an American school, and therefore the institution has the right to display the American flag. However, as these schools are also international as well as being America, displaying other flags of other countries/nations that the students come from, would make the students feel more respected.

    1. I agree. However, our school (LJCDS) is located in the States so I feel like it's ok to not display the flags of other countries. The American flag is very important to Americans and their culture, it is their symbol of freedom kind of. Therefore, it should definitely not be banned to display it!

  2. Displaying an American flag shouldn't defenalty be banned at both LJCDS and TASIS. Firstly, it is an American school and so they have the rights to recognize themselves and to show their flag. Every student shouldn't get offended since they knew that they were going into an American school and that so is their right to show the pride of their country. Every student at TASIS as also the possibility to recognize their country pride in occasions such as the international week. During the international week, students can show their different flags, cultural aspects and pride of their country. The American flag shouldn't not be banned from both the LJDCS and TASIS

    1. I agree! I think the American flag should be hung every place possible because it shows pride for our country and even territorial rights. I disagree with the students for their banning of the flag because they attend an American school and it should be required that the flag be hung. However, UC Irvine is a very diverse school and has students coming from different parts of the world. Because of this, I believe that foreign students should have the right to hang their country's flag. Now, it doesn't need to be hung everywhere on campus, but at least one place would give them enough representation and support. I think letting the students hang their own flags is important because since the United States cannot prohibit immigrants from coming in legally, then the foreign students should have some type of representation of their country for comfort. Otherwise, the American flag should not be banned from any American school.

  3. I can’t think of one good reason why anyone should ban the American flag from any institution. The American flag is a symbol for good. It stands for all the things that America strives to be, and whether successful or not, it stands for universal values such as: courage, honor, respect, hope, freedom, and equality. So saying that these values are offensive is just such a ridiculous over-inflated political correctness. People these days are so scared of offending others, that they become so touchy about those subjects that it becomes offensive.. and annoying. For example, the white people’s freakout over the name of the football team: the Washington Redskins. They claim that calling the team the redskins is racist and saying that their skin is red. In fact, the logo was designed by a Native American and approved by Native American leaders. In the Redskins Facts video, Native Americans argue that they have bigger issues to deal with than a football team’s name. “They’ve never asked Native Americans. It’s somebody else who knows nothing about us trying to speak for us, and it’s kind of an insult.” See, ridiculous.

    1. I find your argument very interesting and I agree to certain aspects. Though I find the name and logo of the Redskins and offensive ( due to how it represents the Native American stereotype ) I do believe that there are more important things in this world worth arguing about. If the same people spent their energy and time on more pressing matters they might have a real impact on the world. These 'minor' problems are important to many people and I respect them for that no matter how different their beliefs are from mine. For this particular case I do not think the presence of the American flag in American schools should be prohibited besides obvious reasons. I think equality and tolerance is a larger problem, that I do believe is worth fighting for. Incorporating other nationalities and pride for the melting pot that America is, is very important and rather than reducing pride, acceptance should be advocated.

  4. I believe, that there is no reason that the display of the American flag should be banned at TASIS or LJCDS because the flag represents their country, and shows that its an international school of America in other countries. Although, the both are American School, and Americans have the right to have their flag in their school. I don't understand why some get offended. By having the American flag at TASIS doesn’t means they colonized the Switzerland; it just means that it’s an American School In Switzerland. That America has a representative in Switzerland as a school. Even the international schools help the economy of the host country by having international students

    1. I agree! I think the American flag should and is hung as to show pride for ones country. I think that maybe more flags could be represented in our school, there are so many people from so many different countries at LJCDS I don't understand why we haven't already started hanging multiple different countries flags on our campus.

  5. In this matter, I believe that TASIS may be an exception as it is regarded as an international school using an american school system. Tasis already prides itself in having multiple nationalities and it would be wrong to display a flag that only represents a minority of the students. Tasis should either hang flags from all over the world or none at all.

In America, the American flag is already displayed in front of most buildings and therefor should be publicly visible at school since it already is outside. While the American flag might represent "exceptionalism and superiority." Almost every flag of any country could also be seen as representing something negative, but the regular impact the flag has on most people is positive.
