Americanists....worldwide!

From Lugano to La Jolla....what a remarkable amalgam of ideas, insights, and perspectives. Welcome to this site. Mr. Izsa (TASIS) and Mrs. Shaul (LJCDS) invite you to join us in our conversations about the history and the realities of America's history and culture--from a decidedly international perspective.

Each month a new series of questions will be posted here by Mr. Izsa and Mrs. Shaul. Please click on the blog posts and write in your comments for the questions below, per your teacher's instructions.

Please make certain that entries are thoughtfully written (check for typos and grammatical faux pas), as erudite as you can make them, and appropriately worded for a school-related activity (note: students from other parts of the world may not share your same philosophies or your same sense of humor, so please be mindful of our differences).

With every blog session assigned, one or two can be direct responses to the questions, but at least one MUST respond directly to the students who have already written posts, answering one thread per question (more is welcome, this is the minimum requirement).Be specific. Explain why you might agree or disagree with their (his/her) opinions. Feel free to "debate" or "discuss" with your international counterpart. Make sure we can identify you with your name so you can receive credit for your contributions.

Thanksgiving Question 2

2.  In an ideal situation, the UN would be able to assume the responsibility for easing the suffering of the Syrian refugees.  What would you like to see the UN do?  Can it?  Why or why not?

  1. I would like the UN to work to relocate all or most the Syrian refugees to countries with the resources needed to support them. However, this would require the cooperation of these countries and their citizens. There are many countries who can support the refugees, like the US, but there is so much ingrained islamophobia and racism that makes it so the refugees aren't welcome. After the attacks in France and other places of the world, it has been automatically assumed that the refugees coming in are terrorists working for isis who want to come into the US in order to enact domestic terrorist attacks which is untrue. So yes, the UN could do this but only if a lot of this islamophobia and harmful feelings are disregarded.

  3. I think the UN should help the Syrian refugees by relocating them to a safe place. I agree with Yemaya that we should relocate them to a safe place with the necessary resources, but this safe place needs to be approved by the citizens of the particular country. This solution can work, but it will be a tough thing to do because not everyone would approve of refugees inhabiting their country/city. There will definitely be suspicions from the citizens who are currently inhabiting the place, but it can't be helped if they don't approve of this plan.

  4. UN could help the Syrian refugees from the threat of their safety. Relocating might help but it might be hard to bring every person to the safe place, and there could be fiscal problem. However, as Jackie said, if citizens approve, they could provide help.

  5. I'd like to see the UN put pressure on Saudi Arabia to accept more refugees. They are in the same region, they have tons of money, and they haven't accepted many refugees.. One problem with this is that Saudi Arabia isn't always kind to their own citizens, and so life for a Syrian refugee might not be as good as it could be in Europe or the US. In addition, the UN might not be able to pressure Saudi Arabia because it has fuel power.

    1. Flynn makes a good point. Other countries in the region should help Syrian refugees because those refugees could return home more easily. The UN can hep motivate Saudi Arabia.

  8. The UN needs to be able to find homes for these people. They will be judged and not wanted in some places but that is not a main concern at this point. It is more important that they have a place to live. I think it needs to be a main priority to find these people a safe home.

  9. I think in theory relocating them to a new safer location would be ideal, however I think that the question of where and how others would react would make it too difficult a task. However I believe the only way a country could accept them would be by having refugees come in slow progressions and intermix them with people who have influence and also make their case and situation better felt by people of that country.

  10. Braxton- I would like to see the UN relocate the refuges in a safe countries near Syria. But being realistic I think they should just find safe places for them period. The situation for the refugees would be better. I think the UN could try their best to make this happen and it is a possibility.

  11. I would like to see the UN set up refugee camps where food, shelter, and medicine are provided. I also would like to see the UN help these refugees settle in a country where they will be safe.
