Americanists....worldwide!

From Lugano to La Jolla....what a remarkable amalgam of ideas, insights, and perspectives. Welcome to this site. Mr. Izsa (TASIS) and Mrs. Shaul (LJCDS) invite you to join us in our conversations about the history and the realities of America's history and culture--from a decidedly international perspective.

Each month a new series of questions will be posted here by Mr. Izsa and Mrs. Shaul. Please click on the blog posts and write in your comments for the questions below, per your teacher's instructions.

Please make certain that entries are thoughtfully written (check for typos and grammatical faux pas), as erudite as you can make them, and appropriately worded for a school-related activity (note: students from other parts of the world may not share your same philosophies or your same sense of humor, so please be mindful of our differences).

With every blog session assigned, one or two can be direct responses to the questions, but at least one MUST respond directly to the students who have already written posts, answering one thread per question (more is welcome, this is the minimum requirement).Be specific. Explain why you might agree or disagree with their (his/her) opinions. Feel free to "debate" or "discuss" with your international counterpart. Make sure we can identify you with your name so you can receive credit for your contributions.

Thanksgiving question 4

4.  Western news coverage has been focus almost exclusively on the events from Friday, November 13 in Paris.  There was also an attack in Lebanon.  Why isn’t that covered?  Should it get the same amount of time/attention in the Western press?

  1. The reason the attacks in Lebanon are not being covered like the attacks in France is because of Western media bias. Lebanon, along with Nigeria and Beirut, are not afforded the time, news attention or Facebook flag options they deserve because Western media tends to focus on European countries instead of countries of POC. This bias goes back very far as a part of Eurocentrism in our media so France remains the focus while other attacks in countries around the world are just the headlines going by on the bottom of the news station.

    1. I agree with Yemaya here.... I can't help but notice the attention that is given to places such as Paris, a loved tourist destination for US citizens, versus the other places that were attacked as well, like Lebanon (and many others!!). Bringing up the other countries is not, by any means, in an effort to minimize the tragedy of the Paris attack, but there are other attacks that happened that deserve just as much attention and support from Western media that Paris got.

  2. The attacks in Lebanon aren't being covered because France is a much more "popular" country in the media than Lebanon. Social media or the Western press is more focused on Europe and America. I think countries like Lebanon or any other country that has not been mentioned should be receiving just as much attention as France is in Western media.

  3. As media is looking for the case which would bring more attentions and give impact to the people, they focused on the country that is more biased. It should get same amount of time and attention in the Western press as both are tragic cases that should be known.

  4. I believe the Reason why the focus of press has been on Paris is because it is a famous and symbolical city. It is very popular and well known which attracts people's attention more than a place like Lebanon. Lebanon deserves to have coverage and attention but it is human nature to focus on a well loved place. Paris is known as a romantic city so when it gets attacked people will go in an uproar. The attack in Lebanon is still a tragedy but it gets over looked by the power of Paris.

  5. The attacks in Paris were covered much more because Paris is seen as a more developed and populous city. The western media has focused more on those specific attacks because Paris is also seen as a place with a large upper/middle class (white) population.

  7. The news wants to share thing that capture people's attention and make them care. Paris influence is greater than Lebanon influence in America and is depicted as a place everyone wants to go, so it's easy to get people to care about a place like that compared to a place like Lebanon that not too many people know of. I think more news should be heard from other places like Lebanon

  8. Paris is more developed the Lebanon. The news wants viewers. Paris was reported on much more than Lebanon. I only heard about Lebanon through twitter. The news was focusing on what they thought Americans would take interest in. I myself feel if I just found out the news from both countries I would google Paris first because there is more connection but I am also interested in Lebanon and would like to hear and see what happened.

  9. I don't know why it wasn't covered but these are some good points. I know more about Paris and didn't know about Lebanon until now

  10. I believe that more people are interested in France because France is an ally of the United States and is also seen as western. France is also a part of NATO which means that an attack on that country is an attack on all other countries in NATO which is like an attack on a neighbor.
