Americanists....worldwide!

From Lugano to La Jolla....what a remarkable amalgam of ideas, insights, and perspectives. Welcome to this site. Mr. Izsa (TASIS) and Mrs. Shaul (LJCDS) invite you to join us in our conversations about the history and the realities of America's history and culture--from a decidedly international perspective.

Each month a new series of questions will be posted here by Mr. Izsa and Mrs. Shaul. Please click on the blog posts and write in your comments for the questions below, per your teacher's instructions.

Please make certain that entries are thoughtfully written (check for typos and grammatical faux pas), as erudite as you can make them, and appropriately worded for a school-related activity (note: students from other parts of the world may not share your same philosophies or your same sense of humor, so please be mindful of our differences).

With every blog session assigned, one or two can be direct responses to the questions, but at least one MUST respond directly to the students who have already written posts, answering one thread per question (more is welcome, this is the minimum requirement).Be specific. Explain why you might agree or disagree with their (his/her) opinions. Feel free to "debate" or "discuss" with your international counterpart. Make sure we can identify you with your name so you can receive credit for your contributions.

Thanksgiving question #1

1.  What responsibility do countries of the EU have toward screening immigration in each other’s countries?  What role would you like to see the US take in this process?

  1. I think the EU is responsible for the immigration of citizens who are from countries of the EU. I think the EU should find a solution toward screening immigration in other countries, because it's their citizens, and they should be responsible for taking care of them. I think the US shouldn't be involved with problems that aren't their own. If the EU needs America's help, only then they should help.

  3. EU should be able to control the immigration such as the number of the immigrants or the problems that immigration might cause. If it does not bring the damage to the society, US could help the country.

    1. I agree with Soojin. The EU should have the majority of the control over immigration problems but the US should still try to help if it isn't damaging or bringing harm to the US.

  6. I think the EU should have a screening process that all EU countries agree on, so that when an immigrant passes through any of the Eu countries, he/she will be held to the same health and safety background checks. I think the US should take on some of the funding challenges that the EU is facing. Most of the immigrants are heading to European countries, but the US helped foster the instability in Iraq and Syria.

  8. The EU should deal with screening immigration from countries in the EU only. And There needs to be standards set for every screening so that no screening is different from another and all is fair and equal. The US shouldn't get involved unless help is specifically asked for.

    2. I agree because the U.S. shouldn't have to police the rest of the world. The U.S. should be concerned with their own problems first, then help if they really need to

    3. I also agree. I think that the U.S. needs to focus on screening immigrants that are coming to America. If we use our resources on the EU, we could miss immanent threats on the mainland.

  9. Countries in the EU have a responsibility to help screen in other EU countries. If EU countries don't help, then the problems of not screening for immigrants will eventually arrive in their countries. If countries are screening then it will help the EU as a whole because it will assure that they are refugees and not smugglers or terrorist. Like Colton said the US is not the worlds police.
