Americanists....worldwide!

From Lugano to La Jolla....what a remarkable amalgam of ideas, insights, and perspectives. Welcome to this site. Mr. Izsa (TASIS) and Mrs. Shaul (LJCDS) invite you to join us in our conversations about the history and the realities of America's history and culture--from a decidedly international perspective.

Each month a new series of questions will be posted here by Mr. Izsa and Mrs. Shaul. Please click on the blog posts and write in your comments for the questions below, per your teacher's instructions.

Please make certain that entries are thoughtfully written (check for typos and grammatical faux pas), as erudite as you can make them, and appropriately worded for a school-related activity (note: students from other parts of the world may not share your same philosophies or your same sense of humor, so please be mindful of our differences).

With every blog session assigned, one or two can be direct responses to the questions, but at least one MUST respond directly to the students who have already written posts, answering one thread per question (more is welcome, this is the minimum requirement).Be specific. Explain why you might agree or disagree with their (his/her) opinions. Feel free to "debate" or "discuss" with your international counterpart. Question 3: choosing of the vice president

3. How does the choosing of the VP candidate impact the president's success at election time?

The choice of the VP is important for some reasons. One of them is that he is the person nearest to the president and he can affect the president on his own choices. He, as VP, has the opportunity to help the president in his presidential decisions.

    1. I agree with giorgio because the VP has the most influence on swaying the ideas or thoughts of the president. The VP holds a lot of power because he is the goto man for the president when it comes to difficult issues

    2. According to the US Constitution, the Vice President's power is being the Head of the Senate, and to replace the President if he is taking out of office for any reason. If you look at it that cautiously, you want to choose a VP that would be suitable to replace the President. The President does ask opinions from the VP, but Obama's job is to make decisions.

I don't really know a lot about the vice president's role, but I think he can be influential while choosing which candidate to vote for. In fact, if one does not really have a preference among the president candidates, his/her choice can be based on the vice president he/she prefers. Also, since they work together, the vice president's opinions can influence the actual president's ones.

    1. I agree with Angela. I too don't know a lot about the vice presidents role other than the fact that they play a HUGE role in the votes the presidents get druing the election. This occurs for many reasons. The first is that the people of the U.S want to make sure that if something does end up happening to the president they will be in good hands. If the president chooses a running mate whom the people find inncompitent it will have detrimental effects on that presidents campaign

There are many reasons, but the most important is that the VP is the person which is most common and near to the president. Also if the president Obama is not elected, but if the VP democrat is elected, it is difficult between the VP and the president to communicate and decide what to do because they are from two different parties. Anyway the VP can help the president or the governor to become president .

    1. The presidential candidate's choice in vice president can definitely be a major contributing factor in whether they win or lose. As John said, I think John McCain's choice in running mate was detrimental for his campaign four years ago. This is because once the vice president is chosen, they are essentially just as big of a figure to the public eye. If the VP candidate is not liked, the presidential candidate may not be favored any more as well.

      Giacomo,
I completely agree with your idea that if the president and vice president were of different parties, it would be nearly impossible to make decisions. Just to clarify, though, the president and the vice president of the same party campaign together. So when a party is elected president, the vice president is of the same party. Good thing things have changed since 1789! :)

    2. Alejandro,
Your point of view is good about if the VP and the President are of the same parties they will have more power and will have more control of the people.

Yes, the choosing of the VP is very important in the election. For instance with the VP for John McCain during the last election, Sarah Palin, may of been a significant reason why McCain lost the election. Sarah Palin was a relatively unexperienced candidate and didn't represent herself as someone who could become the president if something happened to McCain. In the current election, Romney was smart in his choice of VP, Paul Ryan. This is because he choose someone who is well received in the country. This eventually may help his chances during the election with this added boost of Paul Ryan supporters.

    1. I agree with John's statement that Vice Presidential running mates affect a candidates chances in winning. I agree that Sarah Palin was a determent to McCain's campaign but I disagree that Ryan was a compliment to Romney's campaign. Although I see strategically that Romney, as a more moderate conservative, needed someone to "rally up the base" and Ryan was that perfect person. Consequently, Romney's social beliefs were so conservative that he needed a more moderate conservative in regards to social issues to bridge the gap between him and the more moderate liberals. In the end I believe that a vice president and the cabinet are meant to create depth in and for a presidency.

    3. I agree with John, when he gives the example of John McCain and Sarah Palin. In the eyes of the people, Sarah Palin came off inexperienced and not focused. This potentially hurt the McCain campaign because it reflected his decisions on who should precede him if he were to lose power.

  5. I agree very much with John's statement here. His examples support his argument very well to go along with it. A vp can help or hurt any presidential candidate, as it hurt John McCain. The example of Sarah Palin in this argument is spot on. Many Vice presidents have helped many presidents as well. It seems as though Mitt Romney's choice of Paul Ryan was somewhat of a risk, and it worked well for him. Overall, I completely agree with John.

  6. There is a dramatic impact on the choosing of a vice president. Because if the president isn't able to be in command, VP will make all the decisions and if the people don't trust the VP that will most likely change their decisions when voting.

    1. I agree with Joe, The VP pick has to be competent or at least look good in the public eyes. If the president dies than the VP becomes the new president. This is why the VP choice is such a big one. If the VP is an idiot than theres no way that, the candidate and their pick for VP will ever win.

    2. I also agree with jake because in our eyes as citizens the VP needs to look like they can be president. I think in 2008 John Mccain choice to pick Sarah Palin as his VP candidate really derailed his hope of being president because the american people could not see Sarah Palin as President if anything happened to John Mccain

  7. In my opinion the choice of VP is crucial for the common happiness. For example, if a republican President choses a completely right VP democrats would like the president even less. While if the VP is kind of in the meddle the entire population would be happy b/c neither of both parties would prevail on the other too much and at the same time one would prevail slitty more on the other. In conclusion, if something happens to the President the VP would adopt policies which will make both sides happy. Moreover, if it's a time of war the foreign policies of the VP (no president) won't be predictable, being both sided, without putting in danger the country.
